The acclaimed director Yannis Smaragdis chose the Olive and Oil Museum in Vatolakkos to shoot scenes of his new film about the Cretan writer Nikos Kazantzakis. It was "its distinctive atmosphere and photogenie" that appealed to him already from his first visit to our Museum. These were his words after having carefully examined every corner and material in the Museum for their appropriateness to the aesthetics of the time Kazantzakis lived in but also the special way the director wanted to recreate it.
